Customizing is fun! (or, your mod is a really big nerd)
Cross-posted to my own journal, sorry if you see this twice

So yeah, this happened. It's the most awesome blind bag ever, Electric Sky, now in brushable form!

She's made from a Lemony Gems bait (Thank you, princessstarr, she arrived Friday and has become her new pony!), stripped of her glittery cutie mark and given LIGHT BULBS instead and had her two-tone hair ripped out and rerooted with Bobby Blue from DollyHair, and given my attempt at bangs.

Why Electric Sky? Because SCIENCE. That's why. I made Firecracker Burst last year/early this year, just finished Electric Sky here, have future plans (see further down) for Magnet Bolt and Waterfire, and therefore powers of Fire, Electricity, Magnetism and Water ACTIVATE in form of: UNICORN SCIENCE QUAD. Move over Sheldon Coopony, back up Science Woona, these girls are gonna blind you with science! Hell yeah.

(I have as big a Unicorn Problem as I have a Pretty Pony Princess Problem, apparently. *kaffkaff*)

As for future plans...

The dyed pink Diamond Rose (I was pleased as punch she turned out!) is going to become Firefly, to go with the Surprise I already made, more in the style of Lauren Faust's concept drawings)
The brown dyed Rarity is going to become Cherry Spices (another blind bag-to-brushable), because she's fabulous.
The blue dyed Rarity is going to become Magnet Bolt because science.
Green dyed Rarity with jewels in her eyes is going to be none other than Mimic because yes, soon as I'm not terrified to paint her cutie mark.
The undyed, unpainted Fluttershy is (tentatively) going to become Dancing Butterflies. I'm scared of the Twice-as-Fancy-ness of her but I'll give it a go anyway.
As-yet-undyed/unpainted Trixie there is going to become Waterfire. Haven't decided if I dare to try to dye her teal or if I should just paint her.
The painted Sweetie Belle bait is set to become Pumpkin Cake, complete with pigtails, as visualized and brought to life by Egophiliac in Slice of Pony Life. (MOM, DAD'S BROKEN AGAIN!)
And because you can't have Pumpkin and not make Pound, the painted Scootaloo bait is going to become Pound Cake, Pumpkin's twin brother, from the same comic.

Not pictured are a Rainbow Dash bait that's to become Medley, an Applejack bait that's going to become G3 Applejack as soon as Dollyhair has the hair I need back in stock, and a Trixie bait that's going to become Rarity's G1 counterpart, Sparkler. And I have a couple Apple Bloom baits and a Luna bait I'm not sure what to do with yet.

What are you working on! Share! Get moral support! Etc. etc.

*bows in awe of your modding skills* :D And I LOVE the idea of doing a Team!Science.

Do you do commissions? Asking because I'm not the biggest fan of painting the pony to change the colour (because it's really easy to see brushstrokes and it looks 'thick'). Dying the pony looks better, imo.

I could probably do some after the holidays! I'm doing one for bookishgeek when the Crystal Empire singles come out. (Must get a Rarity for this now though, thanks for reminding me!)

Dyeing has been really hit or miss for me. Rarity is, for whatever reason, extremely hard to get to take dye. The green and blue ones in the picture are two separate attempts to get a green one. Yeah, dunno how the blue happened, but whatevs at least I got her.

I haaate full body repaints with an unholy passion. Oddly, Pumpkin Cake there turned out the best. I ended up inadvertently grabbing paint that was "Outdoor Acrylic" paint and it went on SO smoothly I almost shat myself.

After the holidays works! I'm broke as haaaale right now. lol

Rarity? Really? I figured with her being white she would soak up the dye like a primer. Weird! And Pumpkin Cake ISNT a dye job? That paint went on smooth like butter!

But yeah, I'd be interested in getting a G4 version of Fizzy. :)

I know that feel, bb!

I KNOW RIGHT? But no, people on the Arena as well have reported that she's a beast to take dye. The brown one took it really well, but when it came time to try for pale colors... first I got blue, and then I got that muddy green and went "...close enough!". AND YEAH. She's not a dye job at all! I was shocked. So I quick worked around her eyes and and voila! Craftsmart Outdoor Acrylic paint in Antique White. Pound Cake is in "Vanilla" and he... ain't so great. But oh well, he's mine.

FIZZY! Oh I love Fizzy, I'm tentatively planning her for myself so this works out well. Since she's a darker color, I'm thinking a Rarity might take dye in an awesome way. I will get a shitton of baits sometime soon for upcoming customs, and go visit Hobby Lobby for eye jewels and then hope that Tina gets her hair order in soon so I can order ALL THE HAIRS! (or try out Retro Dolls because their hair looks AMAZING)

heh, they probably use a dye-resistant type ish (if they make such a thing) type of plastic for the white ponies. I used to dye G1s to customize, and it always took forever to get the white ones to take any sort of color, and it always ended up lighter than planned.

Oh my gosh, she looks gorgeous!

Thank you SO much for selling me that Lemony Gems!

So that's what the inside of a G4 looks like! The double plug thing is interesting.

Can't wait to see your Waterfire, she's my favourite G3. I'd say see how the hair looks with Trixie's natural tone before you dye her, as Trixie's not that much lighter than Waterfire is she?

I must learn how to make custom ponies!
I love the whole world...boomdiada on November 19th, 2012 01:37 am (UTC)
It's actually pretty easy! This one was super easy cause there was no painting and all I had to do was root hair.
Finnyfinnyb on November 19th, 2012 01:39 am (UTC)
Cool. I must investigate this.

There's lots of tutorials. I'll find them for you after I take my dog out.

I found a cheapy one on Etsy that seemed to be in pretty good shape. If she's still there, I might have to break down and get her because TWINKLE EYES. YES.

I surely will! I had to order hair I had forgotten to get in my last hair order, so she's on hold, but I rooted the red and pink already because I'mma need the red for Magnet Bolt as well and I want to make sure I'm not going to run out.
willowistari: Ponysonawillowistari on November 19th, 2012 06:42 pm (UTC)
I haven't actually done any painting customs because I can't paint worth spit, but I have done hair rooting.

Periwinkle isn't customized at all, she just happens to fortunately look a great deal like my pony character. I do need to fix her bangs though, they got messed up in my bag.

Gosh your dye jobs look fantastic! How did you keep the eyes so nice looking?
I love the whole world...boomdiada on November 19th, 2012 08:42 pm (UTC)
Oh, she looks precious! Aww! What a cutie pie!

Honestly? I didn't cover the eyes at all when I dyed them, I just waited a few days after I dyed it and then took a Q-Tip and barely dipped it in bleach, and ran it over the eyes to get the dyed bits off the sclera/iris. I'll go over them later with a paintbrush in the correct eye color (green for Cherry Spices, etc). Lemony Gems, conveniently, already had blue eyes, so I didn't have to change that at all. I'll have to change Magnet Bolts to a more turquoise-y blue. Mimic I just put the jewels on and then carefully painted the white sclera on around it without getting it on her eyelashes.
willowistari: Ponysonawillowistari on November 19th, 2012 10:55 pm (UTC)
The Q-tip and bleach idea is great. Thanks, I'll have to try that. :D

Your customs are SO PRETTY and clean-looking. I look forward to seeing how these come out! :)
neeko48neeko48 on November 20th, 2012 05:49 am (UTC)
Ooo, I didn't even think about trying to dye them and I'll have to try the outdoor acrylic, it looks so nice. I repainted 2 recently
I guess I have a thing for white and purple. Do you seal them with anything? Mine feel slightly sticky and I can't figure out why :P
Also I love "Slice of Life" too :D Anyways, Electric Sky looks great! Keep up the good work!
I love the whole world...boomdiada on November 20th, 2012 08:14 pm (UTC)
When I do FBRs, I seal with watered down matte Mod Podge or spray-on Testors Dullcote. DO NOT SEAL DYE JOBS EVER. BAD THINGS HAPPEN.

For cutie marks and eyes, when I have them to do, I seal with watered down glossy Mod Podge. Gives a nice shine.
